Botox Treatments
Botox treatments are one of the newest and most popular weapons in the anti-aging war chest. Botox is a very dilute, purified form of the toxin derived from botulinum bacteria. Its medicinal properties were originally harnessed to treat muscle disorders such as facial twitching and muscle spasms. It's effect on wrinkles was actually discovered accidentally in the early 90's when an ophthalmologist was using Botox to treat a patient with eyelid muscle twitching and he noticed that the wrinkles around the area were reduced as well. Since that time, the use of Botox to eliminate some of the unwanted signs of aging has increased dramatically.
Botox works best for dynamic wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that occur when you smile, laugh or frown. They are commonly referred to as frown lines, forehead lines and crow's feet. As you age, your skin becomes less supple and doesn't smooth back out from even after you stop squinting, frowning or laughing. After many years of making the same facial expressions, deep horizontal and vertical wrinkles and lines can form in the forehead and around the eyes. Botox treatment is extremely effective for diminishing these previously hard-to-treat facial areas.
Very small amounts of Botox are diluted with saline and injected with a tiny needle directly under the wrinkle and into the muscle used to make facial expressions. It works by immobilizing the muscles people use when they frown or squint, preventing the nerve impulses that trigger the muscles to contract from being received by the muscles. By blocking these impulses, the area treated appears relaxed, smooth and wrinkle-free. The treatment takes just a minute or two and causes very little discomfort. After the injections, it is recommended that the patient stay upright and not lie down for a few hours.
There is no recovery time with Botox. Clients come in, get a few slight pin pricks and return to their regular activities. Results become apparent within a few days, with maximum results expected in seven to 10 days. Botox does not provide a permanent solution. The effects of the initial treatment lasts between four to eight months. Repeat treatments are needed after that to keep the wrinkles from reappearing.
