Juvederm is Newest Cosmetic Filler
Restoring volume in your face is one of the most effective and natural ways to look younger and more vibrant. One of simplest ways to accomplish this is with the use of cosmetic filler injections.
According to facial cosmetic specialist Mark Crawford, MD, with the Aesthetic Center of Southwest Louisiana, filler injections are becoming increasingly popular as technology has led to improved, longer-lasting filler options. He says the newest type of dermal filler is Juvederm, which is manufactured by Allergan, the same company that manufacture Botox cosmetic.
Juvederm was approved by the FDA in June of 2006, but is only now becoming available in our area. Dr. Crawford says Juvederm, like other fillers, reduces wrinkles and folds on the lower face. "As skin ages, its natural volume diminishes in several specific areas, including the nasal-labial folds around the nose and mouth, sometimes called smile lines. Juvederm can help restore volume in these areas, by smoothing away the wrinkles and folds."
Dr. Crawford explains that Juvederm is a smooth consistency gel made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps to add volume and hydration. "Some of the main components of healthy skin are water, fat, collagen, and hyaluronic acid. Specifically, hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in the human body. The role of hyaluronic acid in the skin is to deliver nutrients, hydrate the skin by holding in water, and to act as a cushioning agent. Juvederm injections add volume to the skin, and restore a naturally smoother appearance to the face."
What makes Juvederm different from other hyaluronic based fillers is the higher concentration of active ingredient, and a patented production method that results in a uniformly consistent gel. Research by Allergan shows that this improves the smoothness of both the injection and the correction. In addition, Juvederm is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is proven to be safe and effective for persons of color.
Dr. Crawford says one of the main reasons filler injections are so popular is they require no down time, can be done quickly, have no side effects, and provide almost immediate, long-lasting, results. "The effects of the newer generation of fillers like Juvederm typically last six months or longer. IÕve found that the key to patient satisfaction is subtle and natural-looking results."
