Mineral Magic: Makeup ThatÕs Good for the Skin
Most people don't think of makeup as being good for their skin, but it can be, if you use the right kind, says licensed aesthetician Leann Widcamp with the Aesthetic Center of Southwest Louisiana. "Mineral makeup, as the name suggests, is made from natural mineral elements. It provides a beautiful look with great, long-lasting coverage. Best of all, itÕs actually good for your skin."
The Aesthetic Center features the Jane Iredale line of mineral cosmetics. Widcamp says these products are actually known in the industry as the "skin care makeup." "They are so safe and beneficial to use that they are recommended by cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists around the world."
The Jane Iredale line is a highly-sophisticated blend of minerals and pigments which are micro-pulverized, using proprietary technology and processes to form microscopic flat crystals. Widcamp explains that these crystals overlap each other on the skin to form a filter that allows the skin to breathe and function normally while still protecting it from air-borne pollutants. "The staying power of the minerals is so great that they rarely need a touch-up during the day, meaning you use much less product, she adds. "And because these silky-feeling powders are water resistant, they won't crease or smear even during the most strenuous exercise."
Widcamp adds that the proven benefits of these products are many, including:
- Non-comedogenic, will not block pores
- Virtually no allergy risk
- Broad-spectrum UVB and UVA protection - up to SPF 20
- Anti-inflammatory, helps to calm and soothe irritated skin
- Very water resistant rating by an approved FDA lab
- Complete coverage for skin conditions like acne, rosacea and redness following treatments like chemical peels and laser resurfacing
- Contains no fillers
- Natural look and feel
- Composed of inert minerals that cannot support bacteria
"Mineral cosmetics offer superior makeup quality. They provide a natural translucence and brilliance which allows light to be reflected from the face thereby creating an illusion of a smoother and softer skin tone," says Widcamp. "This also helps in hiding fine lines and evening out the skin texture. And from a therapeutic standpoint, mineral make-up is especially good for people with skin problems like Roseacea and acne, or for someone who has just had cosmetic treatment or surgery."
